Nigeria: Saraki open up to NASS Crisis.

The president of the Senate, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki in this interview with Senate correspondents at the weekend spoke on intrigues around his emergence as the presiding officer of the National Assembly among other topical issues.
After your victory against the desire of your party one would have expected you to show some hand of conciliation towards the party by accepting the list of principal officers sent by the party?
Let me take the first question where you say that my emergence was not the party’s position. We have it on record that at no time did the party say it has zoned this position to a particular zone. Soon after the election, the Party held a meeting at the caucus level.
At the caucus level, there was a working document that the Party presented, which showed that it has zoned the Senate Presidency to North Central but at the meeting, it was rejected and thus, the Party needed to go back and work on the paper. We waited for the Party but there was no follow up.
Then, we started hearing rumour that the party was thinking that it might consider not holding on to that proposal from the National Working Committee that the Senate Presidency should be zoned to the North Central and may be, it will be given to the North East. Then, the governors got involved, held their own meeting and also recommended North Central.
All we were waiting for was for the party to announce that the position has been zoned to North Central but all of a sudden, the leaders of the party categorically came and said there was no zoning. If the party had said it has zoned this position to the North East, Abubakar Bukola Saraki would not have contested.
Why did you not read the letter from the South West Caucus?
Because I have not received their letter but they communicated to me later that day that their letter should be ready by the end of the business last Friday. I do not know whether they would have submitted it. I did not want to do anything that was not strictly official.
I knew that they had no objection to a particular candidate but I wanted to be sure I got a letter from their caucus like others did and that was the reason I did not announce any name. Their letter has not arrived but they have conveyed to me that they have got nine or 10 signatures and are waiting for two or three remaining to sign but some of them were not around and that was the reason their letter was delayed.
The impression is that you do not want to concede anything to your rivals and it is that the winner takes it all.
If you check, you will find out that I made a plea. There was only one particular zone that had issue and that was North East zone. In the other zones, there was a general consensus on the direction they were going.
But in a scenario where you have over 75 per cent of the Senators holding on to a very strong position, it makes things very difficult and I appealed to them to review it. I also had the opportunity to sit with Senator Ahmed Lawan as part of my reconciliation efforts.
Although some of the good news that have come out of the reconciliation is not in the public domain or reported because I am confident that this matter will fizzle out and blow away because we are making effort to begin to engage ourselves because these are two groups that never had problems. I did say to Lawan when we sat down to talk that he should try and reach out to his members in the North East so that they can come together to begin to engage themselves.
Saraki

The idea is that beyond the issue of leadership, they must work together as a caucus because there will be many issues that would be sent to the caucuses to go and discuss and there must be unity there. I must say that on Lawan’s own part too, I could see that efforts are being made.
I want you also to understand that it is just two weeks after election. It is normal that after election for this kind of position that was fiercely contested for, there would be sentiments and emotions. If you can remember, after Presidential primaries, for weeks, there were people today who are now pretending to love President Buhari more than us, they did not attend rallies.
They sat in their houses and we were begging them. What I am saying is that two weeks to me is short in a healing process and I am sure that if you look at the mood the first day we resumed and the mood today, you will see that peace will come. As someone who has taken this position, I will not stop until I see a full healing process, a full reconciliation.
I am a fair minded person and I will be fair to everybody because everybody has contributed for us to get here. Things have happened unfortunately but it cannot be a winner takes all. Everybody must be part of that process and we will get there.
We are not entirely there but I believe that in the few weeks within this period of recess, by the time we come back, we would be able to get closer and closer as a united APC family. I am sure that by the time we come back with full leadership in place, we will be better off than where we are now and that responsibility is mine. I will prefer my actions to speak more than what I say. Just come back in two months time, I am confident that this will be a thing of the past.
We will unite because we are all responsible and we know the issue before us are greater than this. Even in states where people contest for elections and lose out, it takes time for full reconciliation to take place and I believe we will get there in ensuring there is full reconciliation.
Since your emergence, have you met with President Buhari, Senator Bola Tinubu? What did they tell you?
First, it has been the view of some of us Senators that what Mr. President wants to see as a father is a reconciliation among us as a group and his position is that he will like us to unite so that he is not seen to be on one side or the other. I think those steps are going on.
As regards Asiwaju Tinubu, as you know, he is one of the leaders of the party and I have great respect for him.
Two of us have worked very closely together on major issues at different stages in the development of our party. Unfortunately, in this matter, as much as one wants to win a support of all forces within, it happened like that and I think at the end of the day, we will look at the things we have done together that have gone well.
Yes, it is a setback but I do not think that that in any way was what will dictate the kind of relationship that we have. We are both responsible and committed to the project of the party and Nigeria. We will overcome this and move forward. It is our intention, as part of the healing process to be able to do that and it will happen.
Nomination of Ministers and Mr. President’s position to select them against party’s plea to be carried along. What is your view?
House of Rep: After the fracas
House of Rep: After the fracas
We have elected Mr. President as a leader of the party. I believe he will find his candidates he believes are fit and good for the offices.
I am sure in most cases too, it will be with the consultation with party leaders. There cannot be rigid position. There will be a hybrid. There would be the candidates that he wants and also, in taking those decision, you know that it is not possible for one man to know the entire 36 states. He might have a good knowledge of people in certain states but in some states too, I am sure he will ask people about candidates he wants to appoint as ministers.
What is key is for us to have a right team that will support him because he is heading that team and at the end of the day, he can be happy with who he works with. So, we can say that the prerogative in that process would be his. The process of getting there is ongoing.
What is your reaction to the brawl on the floor of the House of Representatives last Thursday?
Honestly, it was unfortunate but if we have taken certain necessary steps, I do not think these will happen. We must respect the wishes of the members of the National Assembly. Yes, as part of the party, you must work with them but working with them is different from directing the senators and there must be a kind of dialogue because the rules in both the Senate and the House of Reps are very clear.
At the end of the day, party’s role must be seen as guideline or advisory. It must be seen as advisory, not as something that must and shall be implemented. I believe that what we saw in the House of Reps was a fallout of that and that is what I will appeal for, that members of the House sit down together among themselves, not with outside forces.
I am sure they will resolve all the issues and get down to business. As I said, it is not the best but I am hopeful that everything will be alright. This is just two weeks after the election that is due to no fault of anybody, there were events that happened that created a lot of controversies here and there. I believe that within a few weeks, these matters would be resolved and those of us in our party will unite. We have no alternative but to unite and I am confident that the Speaker also feels very strongly that we would be fair to all, try and unite with everybody and move on. I just want to appeal to the media and the public to give us some time to do that.
If you read some of the publications, you will find that majority of the legislators are not the ones pushing these disunity issues. They should leave us in the National Assembly.
Among ourselves, we will find a solution and we will move forward because at the end of the day, once the Ministerial list comes, everybody will leave Senate and be reporting about ministers and appointments. It is we people that have to go and work with ourselves. We should be left to find a course that will enable us to do it. People are asking if we are actually serious but I believe it will come to pass.

Oil barons didn’t sponsor us, Saraki, Dogara reply Akande

Senate President, Bukola Saraki

The Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, on Monday described as baseless a claim by the former All Progressives Congress Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, that their elections on June 9 were sponsored by oil barons.
Saraki and Dogara stated this in separate statements by their aides in Abuja on Monday.
Akande, in a widely publicised statement on Sunday, had alleged that oil barons who never liked President Muhammadu Buhari`s anti-corruption stance, sponsored the elections of Saraki and Dogara in a bid to stifle the new government.
Akande also alleged that some splinter groups within the APC were aligning with old and new Peoples Democratic Party forces to launch a platform for the 2019 polls.
Dogara, in a statement in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Turaki Hassan, challenged Akande to name the oil barons.
The speaker said he expected Akande, an elder statesman, to play his fatherly role at a period of disputes within the APC’s family by seeking ways to reconcile the factions, rather than attacking his person.
Dogara said that the allegations existed only in Akande’s “imagination”, adding that he won his election based on the support of his colleagues, his competence and capacity to preside over the House as the Speaker.
The speaker recalled that the first investigative motion passed by the House after his election was to probe the alleged crude oil swap contracts awarded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.
He noted that it did not make sense for him to back the probe of the same oil sector’s stakeholders Akande alleged to have sponsored his election.
Part of the statement read, “It is baseless and lacking in substance and merit and can best be described as figment of Chief Akande`s imagination.
“We challenge Chief Akande to name the so-called oil barons whom he alleged sponsored the election of the speaker.
“In case Chief Akande does not know, the first investigative motion adopted by the 8th House of Representatives under the leadership of the Speaker was to investigate the allegation of fraud in the oil-swap contract awarded by the NNPC.
“A resolution for investigation into the allegation was passed to constitute an ad-hoc committee to investigate the NNPC as well as its subsidiary, Pipelines and Products Marketing Company, over the swap contracts.
“How then can the House, under the leadership of Mr. Speaker, order investigation into activities of those who allegedly sponsored its election?”
The speaker claimed that his anti-corruption stance was not in doubt as the Legislative Agenda of the 8th House of Representatives adequately captured it.
“Mr. Speaker has on different occasions reiterated his resolve to compliment President Buhari`s anti-corruption stance and insists that the present crop of leaders don’t have any excuse to give to Nigerians on the change promised them before and during the election that brought the APC into power”, he said.
Also, the Special Assistant to the Senate President on Print Media, Chuks Okocha, described the allegations as mischievous and totally false.
Okocha, in a statement in Abuja on Monday, said Akande’s claim gave a negative and dirty impression that the emergence of the senate president was aimed at sabotaging the anti-corruption posture of Buhari’s government and the ‘Change agenda’ of the APC.
He said, “Ordinarily, we would have ignored the report, but for the sole reason that some undiscerning readers might mistake the fiction for the facts.
“We also wish to state unequivocally that it was wrong and mischievous for the statement by Chief Akande to link what happened on the floor of both chambers to some unnamed oil barons.
“We dare say that the entire story was the figment of the imagination of the author.”
Okocha added that Saraki, as the chairman of an ad hoc committee in the 7th Senate, exposed the fraud and mismanagement in the oil sector.
He said, “Until Saraki raised his motion on the floor of the Senate, no one was in the picture of the rot in the sector or took any action.”
“Senator Saraki will be the last person the oil baron will want to see as Senate President. No doubt, we make bold to state that Saraki is the last person to be so sponsored by the oil barons or cabals.
“In that position, Saraki did not only lead his colleagues in exposing the rot in the scheme, but made very strong recommendations on how the system could be reformed and made corruption- free.”
Okocha said that it was on records that after Saraki’s motion on the floor of the Senate, the House of Representatives followed it up with the oil subsidy probe.
He recalled that the ministers of Finance and Petroleum were summoned and, at least, over N500bn was saved.
Okocha said, “During the Senate hearing on the missing $20bn, for those who attended the public hearing, Senator Saraki led the onslaught of difficult questions to the Minister of Finance, Minister of Petroleum and other federal agencies, despite being in the ruling party then.
“To this effect, Senator Saraki refused to sign the final copy of the committee’s report but rather, put forward a minority report with a press statement that followed suit.”
He added that Saraki opposed the inclusion of kerosene subsidy in the 2015 budget, adding that the senate president rejected the Petroleum Swap deal by the NNPC.
Okocha stated, “Let it be known, therefore, that the Senate Presidency of Dr. Bukola Saraki would not in any way be a stumbling block against President Buhari’s posture against anti- corruption.
“Rather, the 8th Senate under him as the president would give all necessary legislative support to the administration to fight and reduce corruption as his previous actions and bold steps taken against the so called oil barons indicate that Saraki is committed to anti-corruption.”
He said that Saraki was elected unopposed as the Senate President, adding that it was a lie that his election was sponsored by oil barons.
“Senator Bukola Saraki is determined and focused to achieve for the Senate targeted legislative agenda and he is committed to support President Buhari to deliver on his promises to the people of Nigeria,” Okocha said.

BVN: Customers besiege banks, CBN rules out deadline extension

BVN queue
Customers on Monday besieged various banking halls in Lagos, Abuja and other cities for their biometric registration in order to get their unique Bank Verification Numbers 48 hours to the deadline for them to do so.
When our correspondent visited banking halls in Lagos on Monday, hundreds of customers seeking to do their biometric registration were seen in very long queues.
Banks visited in Lagos Island, Isolo, Ikeja and Egbeda were full of customers seeking to obtain their BVNs.
The overwhelming crowd forced the management of the branches of some of the banks to deploy more staff members for the BVN registration exercise.
As of Monday afternoon, long queues of customers seeking to obtain their BVN were still seen in several bank branches across the state.
Bank officials in Abuja, Port Harcourt and other major cities told our correspondent in separate telephone interviews that the long queues were recorded in the various branches.
About 14.6 million bank customers will be denied access to certain banking services beginning from Wednesday if the Central Bank of Nigeria goes ahead to end the registration exercise today (Tuesday).
As of last week, only 14 million bank customers had registered for the exercise.
Going by the current statistics from the Enhancing Financial Innovation and Access, an organisation committed to deepening financial inclusion in Nigeria, only about 28.6 million adults in the country have bank accounts
However, the CBN said on Monday that it would not extend the June 30 deadline set for the completion of the registration of bank customers.
The Director, Corporate Communications, CBN, Mr. Ibrahim Mu’azu, told our correspondent in a telephone interview that the bank would not extend the deadline because enough time had been given to members of the public to get registered.
As a result, he said effective Wednesday (tomorrow), banks would begin to deny some specific banking services to customers who lacked the BVN.
Mu’azu said, “For now, the deadline will not be extended. We have given customers enough time to do the registration. For customers who fail to register before the deadline on June 30 (today), they will not be able to enjoy some banking services, including access to loans and Internet banking services until they are able to get registered.
“The registration will continue but the penalty for failure to register within the stipulated time, which includes denying unregistered customers access to certain banking services, will commence on Wednesday.”
The CBN spokesperson reiterated that although unregistered customers would still have access to their bank accounts, they would be denied other services.

APC insists on Ekweremadu’s removal

Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu
The battle for the control of the National Assembly may be long drawn as the leadership of the All Progressives Congress on Monday insisted on removing the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, of the minority Peoples Democratic Party.
One of our correspondents learnt on Monday that the ruling APC was still miffed that Ekweremadu emerged as the deputy senate president and had vowed never to allow “a senator from a minority party take over the duties statutorily assigned for the majority party.”
A leader of the APC, who spoke on condition of anonymity, explained that Ekweremadu as deputy senate president would hamper the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
The APC leader said, “As deputy senate leader, Ekweremadu is automatically the Chairman, Senate Committee on Constitution Amendment. This is a sensitive position that, statutorily, should not be held by the minority.
“Ekweremadu and his PDP co-travellers will hamper the policies of the Buhari government. By the virtue of Senate rules, a member of the minority is not supposed to be the deputy senate leader; so, he is occupying the post illegally.
“We know the body language of some of these elements to anti-corruption. Nigerians know the stance of Buhari on corruption and insecurity. These elements occupying positions in the National Assembly must be removed. Otherwise, this administration is dead on arrival.”
He said the President was in support of the candidacy of Senator Ahmed Lawan for the senate presidency and had told Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, to support APC’s candidates for the principal posts.
“The President has refused to see Saraki and Dogara since they emerged as senate president and speaker respectively. Both Saraki and Dogara have done everything possible to see the President but he has shunned them because he is not happy about their conduct. You can see that the President has seen the Lawan group; this shows where his support lies,” the source added.
Meanwhile, barring any last minute changes, the National Executive Committee meeting of the APC will now hold on Friday.
National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, confirmed this to one of our correspondents in a text message on Monday.
In response to an inquiry from The PUNCH as to whether the party’s NEC would meet in Abuja on Tuesday, Odigie-Oyegun replied, “Necessarily on Friday.”
The PUNCH had earlier learnt that some party leaders at various levels had impressed it upon the party hierarchy to convene the high level meeting in order to find an amicable solution to the crisis threatening the party’s survival.
Members of the 48-member NEC are due to arrive in Abuja on Thursday, our correspondent learnt.
A national caucus meeting said to have been scheduled to hold on Monday was cancelled.
One of our correspondents, who visited both the party’s national secretariat and the residence of Odigie-Oyegun, reported that there was no sign that any meeting would hold at either of the venues as of 8.05pm on Monday.
The APC has been in crisis since the inauguration of the National Assembly on June 9 following the emergence of Bukola Saraki and Dogara as Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively.
The party had announced Senator Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila as its sole candidates for the two positions.
Matters were made worse when the Senate President ignored a party directive that the remaining four leadership positions in both chambers of the National Assembly should be conceded to those who “lost out” during the inauguration.
Autopsy report on murdered British woman missing.
30.06.2015

The autopsy report of the British woman who died at a hotel in Ghana cannot be found at the
Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

According to the police investigator handling the case, after several request for the autopsy report from the Korle Bu mortuary where the autopsy took place, authorities of the morgue have indicated the full report is no where to be found even though it was submitted by the pathologist.
He further told the court putting in every effort to retrieve the report so the case the case could progress.

President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe has challenged President Barack Obama by asking his hand in marriage.
His comment comes at the back of the legalization of gay marriage in the United State by the Supreme Court.
Mugabe in his weekly radio interview with Zimbabwe’s national radio Saturday said, “I’ve just concluded since President Obama endorses the same-sex marriage, advocates homosexual people and enjoys an attractive countenance thus if it becomes necessary , I shall travel to Washington, D.C. , get down on my knee , and ask his [Obama’s] hand.”
“I can’t understand how this people dare to defy Christ’s explicit orders as our Lord prohibited mankind from sodomy,” said the old recalcitrant Zimbabwean leader in an interview with ZBC radio station, adding, the American Government is run by pervert, Satan-worshipers who insults the Great American nation.
According to awdnews.com, the American tradition and heritage was based on lofty Christian principles, added Mr. Mugabe, but to the detriment of this great nation, America’s corrupt political elite is acting according to their diabolic whims.
Obama’s endorsement of gay marriage, the first ever from a sitting president, came amid growing pressure for the president to clarify his previously muddled opinion, as two senior members of his administration announced personal support for gay marriage and a day after voters in North Carolina approved a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
The statement brought an immediate reaction from his prospective opponent at home as well.

Will you support gay rights in Nigeria.

Now that the US has demonstrated its commitment to equality before the law, by ensuring same-sex couples can now marry in all 50 states of the confederate following its historic Supreme Court’s ruling which gave marriage equality as a constitutional right throughout the country one will wonder if this trend will find its way to Nigeria.
Gay-MarriageIn Nigeria,  Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons are still facing legal and social challenges. Here, same-sex sexual relationship is not only illegal, it is a punishable offence.
According to the stipulations of Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act in Nigeria,  offenders are to face 14 years’ imprisonment , and the punishment is death by stoning in the twelve northern states that have adopted Sharia law , which applies to all Muslims and to those who have voluntarily consented to application of the Sharia courts in the region.
Nigeria has been criticized severely by civil rights organizations, as well as the United Nations, for failing to uphold, and violating, the rights of LGBT people but this has not changed the cultural disposition of its people to the topic.

Buhari's Presidency: Yoruba Elders Express Regrets

President Muhammau Buhari may have lost the support of some Yoruba elders less than 100 days into his tenure.
The leaders are particularly angry with Buhari over the recently concluded National Assembly elections, which they feel was a big blow to the South west.
They berated the president for his silence and suggested that their region might not benefit from the Buhari administration despite voting massively for the president during the April 2015 presidential polls.
“For the fact that the South-West played a key role in the emergence of Buhari as the President, it is expected that they would occupy a more strategic position than the post of vice president”, said one of the elders.
They argued that the National Assembly leadership election has  given the impression that their region is weak politically.
Some of the leaders who also participated in the last National Conference also say the region must re-strategise to assert itself in the politics of the nation.
They argued that the position of  Professor Yemi Osinbanjo, the current vice president, who is a South west indigene is not a powerful position.
Chief Ayo Opadokun, a South-West leader, who spoke to the Nigerian Pilot yesterday on the current power imbalance, noted that the Yoruba race made a great mistake by not re-electing former president Goodluck Jonathan, considering what he had in stock for the zone.
He emphasised that the implementation of the National Conference report would elevate the standard of the zone, which is the reason people of the South-West should have queued behind Jonathan.
It will be recalled that during the electioneering period, the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation warned the leaders of the All Progressives Congress to stop insulting Yoruba Obas.
Sharia court and Nigeria constitution power tussle?
  29/06/15

Unity of the citizens of people called Nigerians, is in a dip well because Sharia law can not sentence person to death without the Nigerian Constitution backing it up. Once we want unity in this country their must be level of understanding and tolerance. I can not be sentence to death because I said Prophet Muhamed is a false prophet or he is a doom that brought war, violence, discrimination in the name of Allah.
If it is a true religion, then I will be thought why am making mistake about him not sentencing me to death as if we are in the time of Moses or in intolerance community.
Call a Law a Law not multiple laws that any body can wake up and behead someone and the so called Government said we are one Nigeria.
Meaning Biafra is a struggle and nobody can blame them.
Let see the Federal roll in the matter and see where Nigeria is going.

Kano govt hails judgment that sentenced 9 persons to death for blasphemy
June 29, 2015 Press Release
The Kano state government has expressed satisfaction that the rule of law was allowed to triumph in the case of a recent judgment by an Upper Shari’a Court, Rijiyar Lemo, in the state, which passed death sentences on nine persons for blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammed (SAW).
The government noted that the judgment is a clear pointer to the fact that whoever breaks the law of the land will not be spared.
It then appreciates the patience and the calmness with which the general public allowed the law to take its course despite the unwarranted provocation.
In a statement signed by the Director General, Media and Communications to the state governor, Baba Halilu Dantiye, it observed that accused persons were convicted under Section 110 and Section 382B of the Kano Shari’a Criminal Procedure Law (2000).
The statement also appreciates the role played by the Ulama by calming frayed nerves and preaching for understanding during the whole saga and commended the court for the meticulous handling of the case and for disposing it in good time without subjecting it to unnecessary delays.
The statement further hopes that this will serve as deterrent to those who feel they can come and course a breach of the peace and further justifies government’s resolve to look into the existing law which provides for the regulation of preaching and preachers in the state through the State House of Assembly.

However, the golden question is, can you ever imagine same-sex relationship and/ or marriage becoming a way of life in Nigeria?

APC in dip mess,Akande.

Chief Bisi Akande
A former interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Bisi Akande, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC governors to halt the party’s drift.
Akande, in a statement, on Sunday, warned that the ongoing crisis afflicting the party was capable of jeopardising the chances of the APC in 2019.
He said, “Now that the whole conspiracy has blown open, it is doubtful if the present institutions of party leadership can muster the required capacity to arrest the drift.
“It is my opinion that President Buhari, and the APC governors should now see the APC as a rocking platform that may not be strong enough again to carry them to political victory in 2019 and they should quickly begin a joint damage control effort to reconstruct the party in its claim to bring about the promised change before the party’s shortcomings begin to aggravate the challenges of governance in their hands.”
Condemning the crisis rocking the country’s National Assembly, Akande alleged that “numerous among those calling themselves businessmen in Nigeria are like leeches sucking from the nation’s blood largely through various governments and particularly through the Nigerian Federal Government.
“While all these schisms were going on in the APC, those who were jittery of Buhari’s constant threat of anti-corruption’s battle began to encourage and finance rebellions against the APC democratic positions which led to the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as the candidate of the PDP tendencies inside and outside the APC.”
The Ila-Orangun-born political chieftain recalled that, “With the air of oneness, APC went ahead to conduct primaries to select candidates for state governors and Houses of Assembly and for the Presidency and the National Assembly.
“After the elections which saw APC to victory all round, a meeting was reported to have been held by certain old new-PDP leaders in a Peoples Democratic Party (chieftain’s house) in Abuja to review what should be their share in this new Buhari’s government and resolved to seek collaboration with the PDP with a view to hijacking the National Assembly and, having got rid of Goodluck Jonathan, with an ultimate aim of resuscitating the PDP as their future political platform.”
The statement read in part, “Unknown to most APC members, while Senator Bukola Saraki was being adopted as the candidate for Senate President by certain old new-PDP tendencies, the theory was being propagated that, like in most presidential democracy, the APC minority leaders in the old National Assembly (i.e George Akume for the Senate and Femi Gbajabiamila for the House of Representatives) should automatically become Senate President and Speaker respectively now that the APC has the majority.
“Certain leaders felt that most past Senate Presidents had come from Benue State which Akume represented and that Benue State should be made to assume the traditional home of all senate presidents. At the same time, certain senators were clamouring for one of the most ranking senators anywhere outside the North-west zone that produced the President. That was how Ahmed Lawan who had been in the House of Representatives for eight years and in the Senate for another eight years emerged as the candidate for the senate president.”
